The St. Lawrence Blog

Who is St. Lawrence University? We are a group of people with countless adventures and even more stories. The St. Lawrence Blog gives our students, faculty and staff the chance to tell their tales, in their own words and in their own way. Sharing these anecdotes in one place gives our community the chance to show how creative, daring and passionate we are about what we do. Alone, these stories are powerful; together they define St. Lawrence.

There comes a time in every student's life, whether it be high school or college, where we ask ourselves, “How is this going to help me in the real world?” I remember taking calculus in high school and wondering how derivatives were going to land me a job.

My St. Lawrence journey has been molded by ping pong. Of course I didn’t expect this as a first-year student, but ping pong has become my greatest tool for finding my path as a Saint.

Bringing a bike to St. Lawrence makes sense for two reasons: the campus and the student body.

Colorful leaves on trees

In the 5th grade, I announced to my mom that I wouldn’t be going to college.  “Does everyone HAVE to go?’ I queried.  My older sister’s knowing smile (or maybe it was a sneer) crept across her face as she parroted, “Yes. YOU HAVE to go!” My stomach sank.

On Saturday, October 21, nearly 240 students participated in the national Make A Difference Day, also known as MADD. This day is celebrated across the country in which universities come together through service.

Star gazing at midnight, s’mores and friends, and a barbecue every week pretty much sums up my summer.  This summer I was on campus monitoring wild bee diversity in ornamental gardens alongside approximately 50 other students. My research was funded by the Ronald E.

St. Lawrence offers students the opportunity to take classes on “the inside." Each semester, professors from departments such as English, chemistry, the First-Year Program and history offer a learning experience like no other.

Picture this: It’s the end of November of your senior year of high school and you already know where you are going to college the next fall. That was what the college application and admission process was like for me during my senior year. But, why did I decide to go Early Decision (ED)?

What is the college experience? It's exciting, it's exhausting, it's amazing, and, at times, it can be overwhelming. From the anxieties of your first big exam, to the adjustment period that comes with living in a dorm, being far from home for the first time can be full of ups and downs.

Advocates Family Dinner
Sadaf Delawar, Class of 2019

Scenic views, fresh crisp air, and crackling fires while making s’mores were all a part of my recent trip, the Advocates Annual Retreat to Canaras. Being a part of the Advocates program for the past year has been one of the best parts of my St. Lawrence experience.
